Get involved with the Electric Home Tour

Volunteers needed

The Electric Home Tour is organized by volunteers. We could use your help! Join us by emailing infoelectrichometour@gmail.com about how you would like to participate.

Ways to volunteer:

  • Have you changed at least two major appliances in your house from gas to electricity (not counting an EV)? We are especially looking for older, retrofitted homes that show how it's affordable to switch to electric. New all-electric homes would be great, too. To submit your home, please complete this form.

  • Managing 40+ homes in two counties requires coordination: photos to take, yard signs and literature to deliver, and lots of questions to answer. Join our team as a Homeowner Contact Person. You'll make new friends and help everything run smoothly!

  • High school and college students are invited to serve at each home as Tour Assistants to check in visitors, guide guests, and give residents a break. Stipends or community service credits will be offered to students who attend a training provided via Zoom the week before the tour and who serve at a home for a minimum 4-hour shift. • Several students will be creating videos of some homes that are in more remote locations where the roads are not suitable for many cars or parking. These students could each use a helper for developing questions, deciding what to show, holding equipment, and more.

  • To create an impactful tour, we need coverage in the local press. A journalism background is preferred, but if you are a strong writer, we will train you to create a press release.

  • Do you know someone whose home might be suitable for the Tour? Contact us! We also want help contacting architects and builders to ask if they have any clients in San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties whose homes would be suitable for this year’s Electric Home Tour.

Help spread the word!

Humans are social animals. When we see someone doing something that offers a benefit, we are more likely to copy it. Please invite your friends, family, and co-workers to join you on the Electric Home Tour on October 14!

Here are some sample messages to copy and send:

  • It would be great to see you, and here's an idea for an interesting day together. I've registered for the Electric Home Tour on Saturday, October 14. Over 40 homes will show how they have switched from gas appliances to clean electricity. The free tour is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and we could probably see four or more homes, plus have lunch together.

On the website, ElectricHomeTour.org, you can review all the home descriptions and what’s been done to reduce the use of methane gas. I'm particularly interested to see the one in [name of town] and the one with a furnace that also works as an air conditioner in the summer. Look it over and let me know if you'd like to join me!

  • I'm going to the Electric Home Tour on Saturday, October 14. Want to come along? We can learn from homeowners about switching away from methane gas to clean electricity—and find out about rebates. Check out the website, ElectricHomeTour.org, to sign up, and let me know. There will be more than 40 homes on the tour!

  • I know we both are concerned about climate change and how it will affect our [grand]children — and I'm starting to learn about switching away from carbon-creating gas-burning appliances to clean electric ones. There's an Electric Home Tour of over 40 homes happening on Saturday, October 14, and I'm thinking we'd have a great time together seeing what homeowners have done to reduce methane pollution and learning about the rebates we can get for switching. Here's the website where you can register for the Tour. It's free, and we can map out which homes we'd like to visit. Let me know if you can join me!

  • The Electric Home Tour on Saturday, October 14 includes homes in [name of your town]. Over 40 homeowners throughout Silicon Valley are opening their homes from 10 am until 4 pm to share how they switched from using methane (“natural”) gas to clean electricity. You'll learn about the different electric appliances they are using, how much they cost, what rebates they received, the contractors they worked with — and answers to more questions you have! Go to https://www.eventbrite.com/e/electric-home-tour-tickets-682542742717 to register today for this free tour.

  • Learn how you can make your home more comfortable, reduce the risk of a home fire, and improve your indoor air quality — all by switching from gas appliances to electric. Join me on the Electric Home Tour, Saturday, October 14 where over 30 homeowners will open their doors to talk with visitors about how they made the switch. The tour is free and runs from 10 am to 4 pm. Ask the homeowners about the new appliances they bought, the cost of equipment and installation, rebates and tax credits they received, if they liked with their contractor — or did the work themselves! Sign up here to map out which homes you want to visit.
